This is a p4 layout of Euston Station and the surrounding streets constructed by members of the Market Deeping Model Railway Club
led by Dave Ashwood. David also provided the captions and the description in the next paragraph.
Euston Station was built in 1838 and facing onto Drummond Street and for a few brief years benefitting from an
unobstructed frontal view, the Euston Arch or Doric Propylaeum and 4 lodges were designed by Philip
Hardwick and constructed from Bramley grit sandstone. Strong but quick to weather and pick up soot
and grime, meaning it was eventually much darker than subsequent station construction.
This model, which represents the station in the 1870s, does help us realise what the station and surrounding streets looked like
when railways were in their infancy. London itself would have been a mix of rough tenements with islands
of majestic buildings.
