No. 9 The arch itself was designed by Philip Hardwick and it was built in 1837-8. It is in fact not really an arch but a ‘propylaeum’ of the Doric order. This and the 4 lodges were lovely models and are what made us bite the bait in the first place. Adding gates and mellowing the stone colour brought it into line with photographs and paintings (the building stone for these is different to all other buildings in the area
and weathered dark very quickly).
